What's behind the name Stump Wood Co? The name Stump has taken on a special meaning to me beyond it being the name of my company. The stump is what’s often left behind after the tree has been cut down. Some stumps rot and deteriorate but sometimes the stump will take the life that’s left in the roots and regrow. I’ve seen it many times in the woods: a stubborn little stump refusing to die, regrowing what it lost, a little branch with a green leaf pushing up to the sky. I felt like that after I had returned from war--cut down, almost defeated but wanting to regrow the emotional part of me that I had lost overseas. Stump is a rough word and it doesn’t roll off the tongue, which some may consider a poor choice when choosing a name for a company but that’s the reason I like the name Stump. It’s an unapologetic word. It says, “You cut me down, but I’m still here and I've weathered the storm. My roots are still in the ground and I can regrow!”
After spending many years in the U.S. Army, I decided to pursue my degree at Savannah College of Art and Design in the field of Visual Communication. I’m currently a senior at SCAD, a father, a husband, and when I'm not at my regular job I spend much of my time working from my garage to create the Stump Wood Co products. It's my passion!
All the wood for my products is responsibly sourced from local retailers and I often use reclaimed wood when I come across it. My philosophy when it comes to approaching my wood products is that form and function must exist and work together. The grain patterns in wood tend to have a natural aesthetic which I always consider when creating my products, all the while making sure that they are functional, working objects that will provide the owner with years (or even a lifetime) of use with proper care.
Most of my products can be found here on this site. I also stock some products with a few local retailers. You can visit my stockists list to find out more. Also, to stay current on available products, discounts and other announcements, please subscribe via email or follow me on Instagram .
